Shanghai Yan’an High School Prospective Foreign Students

I.　Application
　a) 　Eligibility: To facilitate the improvement of communication between China and foreign countries and to enhance mutual understanding among young students around the world, Yan’an High School, authorized by Shanghai Municipal Educational Commission, will admit foreign students. Prospective students applying to the September, 2006 Fall school term should be:
　　i.　between the ages of 11-18 (the minimum and maximum ages for Junior High Preparation and Senior High Grade Three, respectively)
　　ii.　in good health
　　iii.　Acquire the right to residence in the People’s Republic of China for the duration of the school term.
　b)　Application Procedure:
　　i.　Obtaining the application: Prospective students can directly contact the Foreign Students Division or go online (www.shyahs.com) for “The Entrance Application for Foreign Students in Shanghai Yan’an High School”.
　　ii.　Application Materials:
　　　1.The completed entrance application form
　　　2.A copy of the most recent diploma or other form to display highest grade level achieved
　　　3.The educational transcripts of the student including the grades for the most recent school term
　　　4.One recommendation from the principal or counselor of the student
　　　5.A copy of a recent health certificate
　　　6.The authorized documents of the custodian in China. These documents can also be found online. (If the student is under 16, this document needs to be notarized.)
　　　7.A copy of the student’s passport and visa.
　　　8.Eight (8) 3 by 4 cm photos
　　　9.A copy of the health insurance forms or policy of the student. (Parents are responsible for the insurance policies of their student.)

　　c)　Application Time: The application process uses rolling admissions (applications will be accepted at any time). However, the entrance time will be September 1st or the end of February.

II.　Entrance Examination
　　All students registered must take part in an examination and interview. The examination subjects include mathematics and English at the level of the according grade. Students with a basic knowledge of the Chinese language should take part in a Chinese language test and will be informed of the examining time by the school.

III.　Admission
　　If the students pass the examination and are qualified after the review of their application, they will receive the “Admission Notice” from our Foreign Students Department and an “Application of Visa for Foreign Students Entering China” issued by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Our school can prepare the visa and residence permission-check for foreign students in Shanghai.

IV.　Class Structure
　　Introductory Mandarin Class: Foreign students without any knowledge of Chinese will have a Chinese language-training course for 5 months before they enter into one of the following classes.
　　1.Standard Classes: Foreign students with a workable fluency in Chinese can take classes with other Chinese students as a standard student at Yan’an High School.
　　2.Advanced Intensive Chinese：For students with a basic understanding of Chinese but do not demonstrate the fluency necessary to participate in standard Chinese classes.

V.　Education System, Graduation，and Certification
　　Junior High students follow a four-year study period and Senior High students follow a three-year study period. After the student has finished his/her courses and passed their examinations, he/she will receive the diploma of the school. Students who fail to finish their studies will be asked to leave the school or end their study in advance.
